  Scholarship in Karst Science

  The William L. Wilson and Diane C. Wilson Scholarship in Karst Science

  The William L. Wilson and Diane C. Wilson Scholarship in Karst Science recognizes the significant contributions of the late William (Bill) L. Wilson, who tackled some of the most difficult karst science questions in Florida and elsewhere through his consulting company, Subsurface Evaluations, Incorporated. To stimulate the development of new, energetic, motivated, and creative karst scientists and to remember Bill Wilson and his dedication to karst science, the scholarship was established by Diane C. Wilson in his memory. The scholarship includes a one-time award of $2,000. The scholarship is open to any student who is currently enrolled in, or has been accepted into, a master’s degree program at an institution of higher education in the United States. This year’s deadline for all application materials is February 15, 2022. Information on how to apply can be found at the Karst Waters Institute website.

  12:00, Friday 01 October 2021, Fisher 214, Securing Water for Food, a Grand Challenge for Development was a program funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development, Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The goal is to improve agricultural productivity across the world. The seminar will review the innovations that were made possible through this new program.

  Sad loss of Professor and Dean John Odiyo

  The University of Venda announced the loss of Prof. Odiyo. Prof. Odiyo was a brilliant researcher and academic leader, he was larger than life and always gave the warmest reception for us when we were fortunate enough to visit the university. He will be missed.

  Apple's M1 Chip

  Apple has recently come out with a new chip that is now available in both laptop and desktop computers. These chips were designed to be more efficient. Unfortunately, it came at a high cost. Specifically, some software is not compatable with the new chips. As a work-around, Apple provides an interpreter, Rosetta 2, which initial reports indicate is slow, which makes sense as it is another layer of software before the computer can actually do the work. Mainly, I’m concerned about Matlab and R/RStudio. The MathWorks has put out a statement about Matlab on the new chip; it will run through Rosetta 2, but it looks like you need an updated version. R is a bit more complicated; for now, it looks like R will run, but through Rosetta 2, according to the r-project, but RStudio for Apple M1 does not appear to be available yet.

  Duquesne Awarded Grant for Water Resources Research in Southern Africa

  The U.S. Agency for International Development has awarded Duquesne University faculty, David M. Kahler, and co-investigators Joshua N. Edokpayi, University of Venda, and Kevin C. Rose Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, a $1 million grant to conduct research on water resources and engage with stakeholders in the Limpopo River Basin.
